At our friends’ engagement party last week, the bride-to-be commented that she’d popped into Hedonism Wines and asked for a wine that would pair well with ‘FYRE: The greatest party that never happened’ on Netflix.
A number of us laughed, but it’s true that I have, on numerous occasions, picked a particular bottle to match what I’m planning to watch that evening. And so, with thanks to our friend for starting the creative juices, here’s our list of suggested wine pairings for some of our most recent TV escapades 1. Killing Eve. With Season 2 having recently aired and tickled our assassin-loving insides, there may be several opinions on the perfect wine pairing. For me though, it’s a no brainer: cool, crisp, razor sharp but with plenty of finesse - it has to be a bottle of perfectly chilled champagne. It’s also the only thing that Villanelle stocks in her fridge, so why choose anything different?
I would recommend the Lanson Green Label (available at Laithwaite’s Wine for £39.99), an organic champagne with fine, persistent bubbles, mineral aromas and notes of pear, peach and citrus. Another suggestion (that’s a bit more pricey) is the Louis Roderer Brut Nature 2009 in collaboration with Phillipe Starck (available from The Whisky Exchange for £77.75), a very dry champagne with little sugar added at dosage. In essence, you want something that’s minerally and dry, with crisp acidity to knock those frilly socks off. 2. True Detective. I’ll happily admit that B and I recently binge-watched Season 3 (Season 1 will always be our favourite, but damn Season 3 was a good watch). You could quite easily pair this with a fine whisky (we quite like Nikka Whisky From The Barrel) or your favourite beer (but I’m not a beer drinker, so I don’t have much to say on that front).
Something a little alternative could be a Black Velvet: a beer cocktail made from Guinness and champagne, first created to mourn the death of Prince Albert in 1861. It’s dark and malty, but with enough effervescence and crispness to lighten the load. My choice, however, would be an Oregon Pinot Noir, such as Grochau Cellars Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 2015 (available at The Sampler for £32). This is a wonderful example, nuanced with fresh acidity, red berry fruit and earth notes. 3. Sex Education. If you haven’t seen this, hop on Netflix now and check out the first few episodes. It’s endearing and hilarious, and by God we love Gillian Anderson. What a babe. The beautiful, sunny Welsh countryside where it’s set makes me pine for a chilled glass of rose – one of our favourites is the Domaine Laffitte Rosé (available at Humble Grape for £13.75, or online at therealwinecompany for £8.99 – a bargain!). 4. Stranger Things. This particular pairing was discussed at the aforementioned engagement party, and my suggestion was for a very funky, natural white or orange wine. Something quite edgy, out there and dissimilar to the usual repertoire. One option is the Mac Forbes 2015 Riesling EB22 ‘Tradition’ (available at Vinoteca for £23.50), an orange wine with flavours of melon, citrus and basil. This is quite an approachable wine for those who are beginning their foray into the natural wine scene.
5. Game of Thrones. I’m going to be honest with you here and confess that I’m not a die-hard GoT fan. I know, shock horror. B has recently been trying to educate me, and he’s succeeded in getting me to take an interest in the storyline. Thankfully there seems to be less gore this season, but I’m not counting on things staying that way! For the die-hard fans (B) and the in-betweeners (me), the matching wine has to be a medium to full-bodied, purple-y or maroon stained red wine.
You could choose an Australian shiraz blend (try the SC Pannell Grenache, Shiraz and Touriga 2016 £18.50 from Vinotecta), or an earthy Italian Sangiovese (if you’re happy to splurge, the Vecchie Terre di Montefili Anfiteatro 2012 £62.75 from Humble Grape, is a beautiful beast - smooth and structured with flavours of plum, tobacco and spice). Alternatively, to match with the rugged landscape of Westeros, a Croatian red could also go down a treat (try the Kozlovic Teran 2016 available from Slurp for £13.95). Whichever wine you choose, just make sure you keep an eye out for spoiler alerts. 6. Fleabag. Again, I think a red wine is in order for Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s clever and viciously funny series. Keep it simple, keep it cheap, and try not to spill the wine down your front as you laugh, gasp and groan at the perfectly crafted and flawed characters. Olivia Colman’s one liners take the cake.
Our low-cost, easy-to-find recommendations include La Vieille Ferme (£6.59 from Ocado or £7.50 from the Co-op) and the Vasse Felix Filius Cabernet Merlot (£12.99 from Waitrose). If you’re in Islington or shopping online, one of our cheap faves is the Listening Station Malbec 2017 (£10 from The Sampler). Otherwise, you could opt for some M&S gin and tonic cans - M&S has reported a 24% rise in sales of these bad boys since they featured (alongside the very sexy priest) in S02, E02.
